When you start looking for recovery help, the terms can get confusing fast. Sober living. Halfway house. Rehab. Recovery residence. Are they the same thing? Which one do you or your loved one actually need?
This guide breaks down the differences in plain language, so you can choose the right level of support.
The Quick Answer
- Rehab is treatment. You get clinical care, like therapy and medical support, from licensed professionals.
- A halfway house is transitional housing, often connected to the justice system or a treatment program, with stricter rules and sometimes required participation.
- Sober living is supportive, alcohol- and drug-free housing where residents choose to live while they rebuild independent lives, often alongside outpatient treatment.
Many people move through more than one of these on the way to long-term recovery.
What Is Rehab?
Rehab, or addiction treatment, is where clinical care happens. It comes in different levels:
- Detox helps you safely withdraw from alcohol or drugs, usually with medical supervision.
- Inpatient or residential rehab means living at a treatment facility for a set time, often 30 to 90 days, with daily therapy and 24/7 support.
- Outpatient rehab, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), means attending treatment several days a week while living at home or in sober living.
Rehab focuses on treating the substance use disorder itself. It's run by licensed clinicians. Our partner, Konnect Wellness Center, offers IOP and outpatient rehab right here in Cottonwood.
What Is a Halfway House?
The term "halfway house" is used in different ways, which adds to the confusion. Most often, it means:
- Housing for people leaving prison or jail, sometimes required as part of parole or probation
- Housing connected to a treatment program, where residents must take part in that program
- Homes with more rules, set stay limits, and closer supervision
Halfway houses can be government-funded or run under contract with a court or corrections agency. Residents may not get to choose where they're placed.
What Is Sober Living?
Sober living is a home where people in recovery choose to live together, stay alcohol- and drug-free, and build the skills they need to live on their own. Residents follow house rules, take drug tests, do chores, attend meetings, and work or look for work.
Unlike rehab, sober living doesn't provide clinical treatment on site. Under Arizona law, licensed sober living homes provide housing and support for independent living, not medical care (ADHS). Instead, many residents attend outpatient treatment during the day and come home to a supportive, sober environment at night.

Which One Is Right for You?
Choose rehab if…
You're still using, need help with withdrawal, or need intensive daily treatment. If you're not sure, start with an assessment.
A halfway house may apply if…
You're leaving incarceration and your release plan requires transitional housing, or a treatment program places you in its own housing.
Choose sober living if…
You've stopped using, want structure and support, and are ready to work on rebuilding daily life. Sober living is a great next step after detox or rehab, and it pairs well with outpatient treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a sober living home the same as a halfway house?
No. Both are transitional housing, but halfway houses are often tied to the justice system or a specific treatment program, with placement sometimes required. Sober living is voluntary, and residents choose to live there while building independent lives.
Do you need to go to rehab before sober living?
Not always. Many residents come from detox or rehab, but some come directly from the community. What matters is that you're sober and ready to follow the house rules.
Can you go to outpatient treatment while living in sober living?
Yes. This is one of the most effective combinations. Many sober living residents attend an Intensive Outpatient Program or therapy during the day while living in a supportive home.
Is sober living cheaper than rehab?
Usually, yes. Because sober living doesn't include 24/7 clinical care, it typically costs much less than residential rehab. See our guide to sober living costs in Arizona.
Does Steps to Recovery Homes accept people leaving incarceration?
In many cases, yes. Our programs include workforce reentry support, and we work with people from many backgrounds. Call us to talk through your situation.
